Responsible Cricket Betting: How to Play Safe
A calm, judgment-free guide to bankroll limits, the myths that cost people money, spotting warning signs, taking a break and finding real support.
People ask this expecting a yes or a no, and anyone who gives one is simplifying. The law around betting in India has several layers, made at different times by different levels of government, and it moved substantially in 2025. This page sets out the layers as plainly as a desk can, says what each one means for a player holding an online cricket ID, and stops there. We are a desk, not lawyers. Nothing here is legal advice, nothing here tells you to break a law, and the responsibility for knowing the rules where you live is yours. It is a page for adults of 18 and over.
| Layer | What it is | Why it matters to a player |
|---|---|---|
| The Constitution | Betting and gambling is a state subject, so each state can make its own law | The answer depends on which state you are in |
| Public Gambling Act, 1867 | The old central law against gaming houses, written before the telephone | Still the base many states built on; exempts games of skill |
| State laws | Some states prohibit online real-money games, a few license them, most are silent or rely on the 1867 model | Check your own state, not a general answer |
| IT rules, 2023 amendment | Central rules on online gaming; games that involve wagering on an outcome are not permitted, and offshore betting sites can be blocked | Why exchange addresses change and sites get blocked |
| Online gaming law, 2025 | A central Act passed in August 2025 that prohibits offering, advertising and processing payments for online money games | The biggest change in years; see below |
| Tax | GST on online money gaming at the top rate on the full value of bets since October 2023; winnings are taxable income | Winnings are not tax-free |
| Advertising rules | Government advisories tell media and platforms not to carry betting ads, including surrogate ads | Why genuine desks do not advertise, and why ads are a clone signal |
Indian law has long drawn a line between games of skill, which the 1867 Act and most state laws leave alone, and games of chance, which they restrict. Courts have placed rummy and horse-race betting on the skill side and, in several High Court decisions, fantasy sports too. Betting on the outcome of a cricket match, or on a session line, is wagering on an event you do not take part in, and the law has generally treated that as chance. That distinction is why fantasy apps advertised on television for years while betting exchanges never could, and it is the distinction the 2025 law largely set aside by treating money games of either kind the same way.
Parliament passed a central law on online gaming in August 2025. As we read it, the Act promotes e-sports and social games, and prohibits online money games, meaning games played for stakes whether of skill or chance, along with advertising them and facilitating payments for them. The offences it creates are aimed at those who offer, advertise or process payments for such games. How it is enforced against offshore exchanges, which are run from outside India, and how it sits alongside the state laws, is still being worked out at the time of writing, and the position may have moved again by the time you read this. We will keep this page updated with what we can verify and will not guess at the rest. If this matters to a decision you are making, read the Act itself or ask a lawyer rather than rely on a betting desk's summary.
A handful of states have laws that prohibit online real-money games outright, and have had them tested in court more than once. A few, mostly in the north-east, run licensing regimes for online games of skill. Goa and Sikkim license physical casinos. Most other states rely on their own version of the 1867 model, which was written for gaming houses and does not mention the internet. The practical point is that the same login can sit in a different legal position depending on where the phone is, and only you know where your phone is. We do not list states by name here because the list changes and a stale list is worse than none; the state government's own gazette or a lawyer in your state is the right source.
The exchanges on this site are run from outside India and reach players through desks. No Indian regulator licenses them, so there is no regulator to complain to if something goes wrong; a dispute is between you and the desk, which is why the checks on the providers page matter more here than in a licensed market. Winnings are taxable. Bank accounts used for betting payments can attract questions from a bank's compliance team, and a payment to a fraudulent desk may be hard to recover; the anti-fraud policy explains the first-hour steps if that happens. Most of what a player actually suffers in this market comes from counterfeit desks, counterfeit login pages and stolen phones, not from the law, and those risks shrink with the habits repeated across this site: reach the desk only through this site, pay nothing until the login exists, keep OTPs and PINs private, and make a small withdrawal early.
We do not advise anyone to break a law, and we do not tell players the law is other than it is. Every login we create is for an adult of 18 or over, and we close any that turns out not to be. We do not advertise, run groups or send APKs, because the law and the fraud risk point the same way on all three. If you decide the position in your state means you should not hold an ID, the responsible gaming page explains self-exclusion and the desk will close the ID on request without argument. If you decide to hold one, treat it as entertainment with real financial risk, set a limit before the first match, and read the about page so you know who you are dealing with.

The law as a desk understands it. Not legal advice. 18+ only.
There is no single answer. Betting is a state subject, several states prohibit online money games, and a central law passed in 2025 prohibits offering and advertising them. We are not lawyers; check the rules where you live.
As we read it, it prohibits offering, advertising and facilitating payments for online money games, of skill or chance, with offences aimed at operators, advertisers and payment facilitators. Enforcement against offshore exchanges is still settling.
Courts have generally treated wagering on a match outcome as chance, unlike rummy, horse racing or fantasy sports. The 2025 law treats money games of either kind the same way.
